Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Italian State Forestry Corps and Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund
On April 13, 2016, a ceremony marking the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF) and the Corpo Forestale dello Stato took place at the General Inspectorate of the Italian State Forestry Corps in Rome. The memorandum promotes cooperation and agreement in the field of management and enhancement of natural protected areas, protection of environmental resources, implementation of international conventions, teams for scientific and technical activities and for territorial planning, research projects for biodiversity protection and management of forestry resources, as well as training programs, education and event planning courses that deal with environmental fields. The agreement also envisages shared projects related to natural areas that are protected or have environmental value.
According to KKL Italy President Raffaele Sassun, “the Memorandum signed today represents a handshake between friends who are committed to developing new ways of protecting our planet. We do not close the door on anything, from the simplest issues to those that are almost impossible to solve, from educational projects to complex field operations. My dream is that as a result of this connection, we will find a solution to the problem of Xylella fastidiosa, not only because it would be of great value to the entire world, but also because I am very attached to the olive tree, which is a symbol of peace in the Jewish-Christian tradition and a source of light, fertility, strength and the future. As it is written in Psalms 1.3, ‘He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers’. I wish success to all of us and to the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed between KKL-JNF and the Corpo Forestale dello Stato”.
Cesare Patrone, Director of the Corpo Forestale dello Stato, said that the Memorandum of Understanding “is the beginning of an important collaboration between the Corpo Forestale dello Stato and Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund, which is one the oldest environmental organization in the world. This agreement, which views the Mediterranean basin as a focus of civilization, culture and history, aims to transmit these important values to future generations, through a synergy created by mutual experience and the commitment of both parties to the care and protection of the environment. The Corpo Forestale dello Stato is very proud of the initiative to dedicate a site on Mount Carmel to the Italian Forestry Corps, which will either be a monument or an artwork that will testify to the cooperation between our two organizations. I'm sure that our mutual goals and values, as set forth in the protocol, will serve as a model for everyone who believes in the promotion of environmental culture as essential for the younger generation”.
