President of Paraguay Plants an Olive Tree in Jerusalem

Making the first state visit by a president of Paraguay to Israel, President of Paraguay H.E. Horacio Manuel Cartes Jara, planted an olive tree at KKL-JNF’s Grove of Nations in Jerusalem as a symbol of peace and friendship between the two countries on July 18.
“I am very honored to be planting this olive tree in the Grove of Nations. I do it as a testimony of peace as president of all the Paraguayans, a nation which throughout its history, like Israel, has valued and treasured peace as a basis for the development of humanity,” said President of Paraguay H.E. Horacio Manuel Cartes Jara. “This ceremony also constitutes an emblematic expression of our wish of peace for the region and the world, and as harboring of hope and perseverance for future generations.”
Among those accompanying the president on his three-day state visit were his two daughters, Sol and Sofia, as well as the Paraguayan Foreign Minister H.E. Eladio Loizaga, Minister of Agriculture H.E. Juan Carlos Baruja,   Minister of Industry and Commerce H.E. Gustavo Leite, Minister of Education H.E. Enrique Riera Escudero, Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies of the  Congress, H.H. Deputy Miguel Tadeo Rojas Meza, Paraguayan Ambassador to Israel Max Haber and Israeli Ambassador to Paraguay Peleg Lewi.
The delegation was greeted by KKL-JNF World Chairman Danny Atar, KKL-JNF Chief of Protocol Andy Michelson, KKL-JNF Latin American Department Director Ariel Goldgewicht, and Demian Krzymuski of the KKL-JNF Latin American Department.

“We are very honored to have you here today.  We appreciate very much your stance as a friend of Israel,” Atar said in his welcoming remarks. “Your brave stance symbolizes above all the relationship between Paraguay and Israel, which under your leadership is an honor for us and we deeply appreciate it. We take pride in our friendship and you have our utmost support.  We hope our relationship will serve as a point of light for other countries.”

He noted that the location of the ceremony at the Grove of Nations, where every head of state who has visited Israel has planted a tree, is also a strong symbol of the values of the Jewish people which embraces peace and tolerance

“Planting a tree here in Jerusalem, our capital for thousands of years, is also a symbol of our connection to this land. The olive tree, which from the time of Noah has symbolized peace, also symbolizes the connection between our two countries,” Atar added. “It is an expression of our appreciation for you and your leadership. We wish you that in planting this tree, the roots will continue to strengthen the relationship between our two countries and that it becomes a symbol of our future path together.”
