Olympiyaar Forest Olympics Conclude a Year of Volunteering

Post-highschoolers participating in KKL-JNF’s 15th komuna (cycle) of one-year national service volunteers (popularly known as shinshinim) marked the conclusion of their year’s service with the organization by participating in the first Olympiyaar event, where sports activities were held in Ben Shemen Forest on Friday August 5th as part of KKL-JNF’s Summer of Unforgettable Experiences.

The one-year national service volunteers of the 15th komuna organized sports competitions for the youngsters, who were also provided with interesting information about Ben Shemen Forest, KKL-JNF and the Olympic Games. The participants were given the opportunity to experience games of football and golf, a relay race, tug of war, swimming in a variety of styles, and more.

Volunteer Roi Weissman organized an event that simulated the Paralympic Games, in which the youngsters played a football game while sitting in wheelchairs. Roi said afterwards: “It was great to work with the kids and to teach them new things and stuff about the Olympics that they didn’t know.” He summed up his time as a volunteer as “an instructive and enjoyable year during which you feel that you’re contributing to society and the community.”

With the help of an obstacle course that taught them about the continents of the world and the values upon which the Olympic Games are based, volunteer Liron Livne invited the children to learn about the five rings that symbolize the Games. Liron told us: “It’s really fun to teach something that you’re interested in yourself, and the children got very involved in the activity.” She described her experience as a volunteer as the most significant experience in her life so far: “Working and living together with other people made the komuna a second family for me.”

A KKL-JNF fire truck was another major attraction at the Olympiyaar. Dror Tayyeb, who had brought the truck along, told the youngsters all about KKL-JNF’s battles against forest fires and gave them a brief opportunity to be firefighters themselves.

Later in the day there were more specialized competitions in archery, tight-rope walking and go-kart biking. All the youngsters greatly enjoyed being an Olympic competitor for a day in KKL-JNF's Ben Shemen Forest.

KKL-JNF’s volunteers concluded their year of service in the most appropriate way, with an excursion to Sataf in the Jerusalem hills, together with regular hikers they had instructed throughout their volunteer year.

With thanks and very best wishes for the future to our shinshinim of the15th Komuna: Goni, Yehonatan, Yochai, Liron Nitzan, Ido, Paula, Roi, Shavit and Shoham.
